Concealed Shoes

Throughout time, home owners, builders and archeologists have found old shoes hidden in their chimneys. The reason behind this is a completely unsolved mystery but people think that they first started to be put there for luck or to ward off ‘evil spirits’. The shoes are always very worn out and used too. What do you think they are there for? Historians believe that there are still thousands of these secret shoes left to be discovered.

Usually, these shoes are found in chimneys but sometimes they are found in the roof or under floorboards. It creates an impression of protection, luck and hidden messages. These shoes below on the left are over three hundred years old and are adult men and woman's shoes dating from 1700. On the right is a little child's shoe.  Can you imagine that these shoes were lying untouched for all those years since a person put them there 300 years ago?! Think of all the changes throughout time that would have happened since then in a typical house...
