The True Story of Cindrella

Cinderella is one of the most famous tales involving a shoe. Cinders was actually based on an old tale which is said to be true and was passed down through generations by word of mouth. The glass slipper was definitely not a feature though:

The story began in Lydia (an old land in Turkey) in 56BC and the name of the real Cinderella was 'Rhodepai'. When Rhodepai was a child she started working in a rich household with her friend Aesop (of the fables). After moving to Egypt for a while and then finally Greece, she became very well known for her beauty. One day when she was swimming, an eagle swooped down and flew away with one of her sandals. The Eagle then dropped it in the courtyard of a nearby palace. The King who found the shoe was curious and ordered a nationwide search for its owner, Rhodepai was found and they then married.
